Ok, I am guilty. I had become so comfortable shopping at my primary grocery store of choice that I let sale opportunities pass me by.  A visit to a competitor grocery store in my area this weekend revealed lots and lots of savings.   Yes, I too was blinded by the big name, loyalty cards and hyped up ads at the more popular store. That was until... I traveled a  few miles outside my comfort zone and discovered goodies like five pound bags of potatoes for a dollar and chicken legs for 89 cents a pound.  I wonder what I will discover next time?  My advice, don't be so loyal.  Your loyalty may be costing you money.

Have you gone shopping lately? There are items on clearance almost everywhere you turn.  It is officially the fall season and now is the perfect time to get all your summer essentials for next year plus more (money permitting of course).  I was in Bed Bath and Beyond today and could not believe the deals that I saw.  So keep your eyes peeled...you are likely to find lots of deals and steals near you.

I have not been to the movie theater in a while.  I mean, right now, in this economy...I just feel like there are smarter ways to spend my money.  One of the smart ways that I have found are dvd rentals from a grocery store kiosk.  The most popular one that I know is Redbox.  From the convenience of a store kiosk, one can rent new releases for a buck a night.  The drawback however, is that this method of video rental has become so popular that you may not always find the movie rental that you are looking for.

But, don't be dismayed.  I just found out that you can actually reserve your selected titles online before you get to the kiosk. So what are you waiting for? You can take your family to the movies tonight. All you need is a dollar, a kiosk and someone to reserve your favorite spot on the couch.

Everyone seems to be talking about staycations these days.  It is one of the many buzz words in this uncertain economy.  But what is a staycation? A staycation is a vacation or getaway in the area that you live.   The idea is, since you are taking advantage of resources in “your own backyard”, you save on airfare, travel and even lodging. 

Great staycation deals may be found all around you.  When planning your staycation, first decide if you want a “city getaway” or a more laid back country or resort feel to your staycation.  People who live near major metropolitan cities are fortunate to have both as viable options while still being able to maintain their staycation budget.  One can often take a 1-2 hour drive outside a major city and take advantage of all sorts of deals.  Depending on where you live, you may even be able to get to the beach!  How’s that for a staycation?

Or limit your drive and take advantage of attractions in your city or neighborhood.   I can’t tell you the number of people that I have met that live in or near a major city and have never visited the city’s attractions.   Live near DC... take advantage of the monuments, museums and many attractions.  After all, millions of other people do every day.   Live near the hustle and bustle of “Sin City Vegas”… getaway and visit the Hoover Dam.  Live near the ATL (Atlanta)…try visiting the Georgia Aquarium, go to an Atlanta Braves game or visit the CNN center. 

Remember, you live there so have home court advantage.  You probably have your own car, and are somewhat familiar with the city and culture.  Since you are local, you may also get great deals on hotel and attractions. Not to mention, you can avoid the security hassles at the airport and use some of the money you saved on luxurious extras like massages and spa services.  So what are you waiting for? Your next vacation is probably only 30 minutes away.

This week in Giant grocery stores near you...you can double the value of your $1.00 dollar manufacturer coupons.  That's right, I said double.  There are 4 coupons in this weeks sale paper (valid August 28th to September 3rd in MD/DC area).  Essentially, one can save eight dollars on this week's grocery bill.
